Salmon River guides

If it is your first time on this river, a guide is the difference between a story and a long cold morning. Here is what a day actually costs, what to ask before you hand over a deposit, and who has a listing here.

How this list works. Guides pay a flat seasonal fee to appear. That is the only thing a payment buys — there is no commission on your trip, no ranking by who paid most, and no kickback if you book.
It is not every guide on the river. There are dozens working the Salmon River. This is a short list of people who wanted to be findable here. Ask around too — the shops in Pulaski know everybody.
WHAT A DAY COSTS HERE
DRIFT BOAT, ONE ANGLER
$350
Typical full-day rate on this river
DRIFT BOAT, TWO ANGLERS
$450
Total, not per person — two is the usual max
LENGTH OF DAY
8 hrs
From the meeting point, usually in the dark
GEAR
Included
Rods, tackle, terminal gear. Bring waders and a licence.
Rates are the going range on the Salmon River as published by local guide services, not quotes. Walk-and-wade trips usually run less than a drift boat. Peak-week dates go months ahead — if you want a specific October Saturday, book it in July.
BEFORE YOU SEND A DEPOSIT

Six questions worth asking

Boat or bank?

A drift boat reaches water nobody can walk to and is the better call in high flows. Walk-and-wade costs less and teaches you water you can fish again without him.

What happens if the river blows out?

Releases and rain can make a day unfishable. Ask the reschedule and refund policy in writing before you pay, not the morning of.

Spin, float or fly?

Most guides here run all three, but everyone has a preference. Say what you want to learn so you are not handed a rod you did not come for.

Are you licensed and insured?

New York licenses its guides. A working guide will tell you their number without hesitating. Anyone who dodges the question is answering it.

How do you fish for salmon?

A fair question on this river. If you want fish hooked in the mouth, say so up front — and know that a guide who says the same is telling you something about how the day will go.

Where do we meet, and when?

Usually a shop parking lot in Pulaski, in the dark, well before first light. Get the address the week before, not the night before.
