Seventeen miles of river, twelve of them free, one stretch you pay for, and a lot of private land in between. Here is the plain version, pool by pool, written from five minutes up the road.
This is our stretch — the top of the river, closest to the hatchery and the Lighthouse Hill dam. Fish arrive here last, which means late September and October rather than the first week of the run. It also means the water clears fastest after rain.
The middle river spreads anglers out better than either end. It is also where the USGS gauge sits, so the number on our live river report is measured right here.
Closest to Lake Ontario, so fish arrive here first and freshest. It is also the busiest end of the river, and the only place you will be asked to pay.
Everyone 16 and over needs a New York freshwater fishing licence, including on the Douglaston Run. The DSR pass does not replace it.
Public Fishing Rights cover the bank, not the walk in. Use the marked DEC lots and posted footpaths rather than cutting across fields.
In peak weeks anglers are in the water before first light. If you want a specific run at Altmar, Pineville or Black Hole, be parked well before sunrise.
The bedrock here is slick. Studded boots or metal cleats and a wading belt make the difference, especially above 700 CFS.
Releases from Lighthouse Hill move the flow within the hour. Check the live gauge the morning you go, not the night before.
The Lower Fly Zone opens 15 September and closes 15 May. Both zones are catch and release, fly only, and enforced.
If you are coming the first week of the run, fish low — Pulaski, or pay for the Douglaston Run. Fish are still arriving and the upper river may be empty.
From late September through October, the whole system holds fish and the upper river around Altmar comes into its own. That is when being based up here stops being a convenience and starts being an advantage.
For steelhead, from November onwards, go wherever there are fewest trucks. The crowds have gone home and the fishing is often better than October.
Self check-in on a keypad, so a 4am start wakes nobody. Ask us about conditions before you book — we will tell you if your dates look wrong.
