WHAT THE BASE MEANS FOR SLEDDING
UNDER 6"
Thin. Most clubs keep trails closed.
6 — 12"
Rideable. Watch for bare spots and rocks.
12 — 24"
Good base. Groomers out, trails holding.
OVER 24"
Deep. This is why people come to Tug Hill.
Snow depth, new snowfall and the forecast are pulled live for Altmar and refresh on their own. Depth on the plateau east of us runs deeper than here — always check your club's trail status before you tow.
BOOK A WINTER WEEK
WHY HERE

Tug Hill gets the snow

Lake Ontario feeds the plateau east of us with lake-effect snow all winter. It is one of the most reliably snow-covered regions in the eastern United States, and the trail network is built around that.

TRAILS
Ride from here
Oswego County and Tug Hill corridors run within reach of the cabin. Park the trailer on the gravel and unload.
DEC — MAR
Reliable base
While other regions wait on snow, the plateau usually has it. Check the local club report before you tow.
STEELHEAD
Fish it too
The river runs all winter and holds chrome. Bring a rod along with the sled.
AFTER
Come back warm
Indoor fireplace, washer and dryer for wet gear, and a covered porch to unload under.
IN THE COLD MONTHS

What the cabin is like in February

Single storey, no stairs to haul gear up, and heat that works. It is a short drive on plowed roads from Route 13.

HEAT
Indoor fireplace
The room everyone ends up in after a day on the trail.
DRY
Washer and dryer
Wet bibs and gloves dried overnight rather than draped on a radiator.
PARK
Trailer space
Gravel turnaround with room for a truck and a two-place trailer.
QUIET
Nobody around
Winter is the emptiest season on the island. That is the appeal.
ARRIVING 2027
Hot tub
Our next major upgrade. Coming to the property in 2027 — ask us where it stands when you book.
WINTER AT THE CABIN

The snow that made Tug Hill famous

Lake Ontario picks up moisture, runs into the plateau east of us and drops it. Most winters the yard holds a couple of feet from December straight through March — silent, white, and five minutes from a groomed trailhead.

Book the quiet season

Trails, steelhead and an empty river. Winter dates are the easiest to get.

“This was a great place to stay. This was the second time I’ve been there and going again in February — very romantic, with beautiful scenery and landscapes. Very clean and well stocked with amenities.”
